Assess inherited Alzheimer’s disease risk

Available only as an add-on to Curated Screen, APOE genotyping uses whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to assess inherited risk for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and, when applicable, related cardiovascular and lipid considerations.

Alzheimer's risk insights from whole-genome sequencing

The APOE Add-On uses WGS to characterize the variants that define the three common alleles (ε2, ε3, ε4), helping identify which of six common genotypes your patient has and informing late-onset AD risk relative to the population baseline.

Validated late-onset AD risk insights

Comprehensive WGS analyzes the variants behind the three common APOE alleles (ε2, ε3, ε4) to identify which of the six common genotypes your patient carries.

Add-on or re-requisition

The APOE Add-On draws on the same whole-genome data as Curated Screen, producing a focused, standalone report without requiring a separate test order or sample.

Inform proactive care

An APOE result can inform lipid screening and risk management, guide future treatment eligibility discussions, and prompt personal, family, and care planning conversations.

Six genotypes, three clear risk categories

Three common APOE alleles produce six genotypes. Each report assigns one of three risk categories.

GenotypePopulation frequencyLifetime AD risk†Risk category
ε2/ε2<1%Lower than averageDecreased
ε2/ε3~10-15%Slightly lower than averageDecreased
ε3/ε3~60% (most common)Population baseline (~10-15%)1,2Average
ε2/ε4~2%Slightly higher than averageIncreased
ε3/ε4~20-25%~20-25% by age 853Increased
ε4/ε4~2-3%~50-60% by age 853Increased

†Risk estimates are derived primarily from studies of individuals of European ancestry and vary by sex and age horizon; both risk magnitude and allele frequency differ across ancestral populations.

Add it to a new order, or re-query an existing genome

Patient* (aged 18+)

New patient

Ordered alongside Curated Screen at no additional cost

Existing Curated Screen patient

Ordered as a re-requisition - no new patient sample required

WGS and analysis

New patient

APOE genotyped from the Curated Screen dataset

Existing Curated Screen patient

Existing dataset re-queried for APOE genotype

Report

New patient

Standalone APOE report delivered in ~5-6 weeks, separately from the Curated Screen report

Existing Curated Screen patient

Standalone APOE report delivered in ~1 week

*Intended for asymptomatic adults; not diagnostic. Does not assess early-onset AD genes (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2).

Important test considerations

  • APOE Add-On must be actively selected at ordering; it is never included by default. If the Curated Screen order is cancelled, the APOE add-on is cancelled with it.
  • Standard Atlas monogenic consent applies; no additional consent form is required.
  • Risk estimates are derived primarily from European-ancestry cohorts and may over- or understate risk in other populations.
